PROBLEMS FACED BY STUDENTS & OUR APPROACHES

PURE PHYSICS
  • Students usually come to my class feeling lost and having no idea of what physics is about and also with no clear direction of how to tackle problems and master the concepts. Therefore, they tend to choose the easy way out which is to memorize the content of the syllabus blindly.
  • The main issue for this problem is that some schools are teaching Physics like Maths (as if it is all about learning the methods of solving the problems) or Humanities and other sciences like Chem and Bio(memorizing and apply). But the truth is Physics is slightly much more complicated than that.
  • It is not just about solving the questions by applying the methods from examples but rather understanding the concepts and able to apply when answering questions. Memorizing will not help much as each and every question in Physics syllabus vary vastly from examples and questions in text books.
  • Everything is about understanding and applying the concepts for both problem solving and explanation questions.

  • Personally the way I approach physics is slightly different, showing examples and giving worksheets are usually the last things to do in class.
  • First thing to do is always to explain the topic and to make sure each and every students are able to understand and able to appreciate the content of the syllabus. As Physics is all about us and the universe we live in and we should be able to relate to it all the times.
  • That way, students will not only feel that they are gaining actually-real-world-application knowledge, but they also start to enjoy the subject. Instead of dragging themselves to classes, now they look forward to physics lessons.
  • With that attitude towards the subject their grades will gradually improve and eventually not just the grades but the knowledge they gain will also stay with them until they move on to further studies.
PURE CHEMISTRY interntional baccalaureate

  • GCE ‘O’ Level Pure Chemistry (5073) syllabus is now designed to place less emphasis on factual materials and greater emphasis on the understanding and application of relevant scientific concepts and principles.
  • Many students experience difficulty applying the chemistry knowledge learnt in school to questions in examinations involving new novel situations outside textbook context.
  • Furthermore, many students who rely on pure memorizing to score and have a poor grasp of the Chemistry concepts, they would find difficulty answering the structured and long questions in Paper 2 which carry the majority of the marks in the exam.

  • Our systematic approach here would be to first build up the chemistry foundation of the student and ensure students acquire a firm grasp of the chemistry concepts and principles as well as consolidate their learning in school.
  • To tailor towards the trend of tougher application questions seen in the Prelim exams set internally by schools as well as ‘O’ Level national exams, we focus on giving students an exposure to such questions and practice applying the concepts to answer the questions.
  • Here, we also commit to impart students with the skills to understand the requirements of the various types of questions in exams and to fine tune their written answers to include the essential keywords needed to score. With adequate understanding and practice, students would find chemistry very manageable. Students would also need to be committed to work hard on their part to practice more to excel and achieve stellar results in the examinations.
